How does a camping toilet work?
A separation toilet operates entirely without water. The secret: urine and solid waste are collected separately. This prevents the waste products from mixing—and that’s exactly what significantly reduces unpleasant odors.
Here’s how it works, using the BOXIO separation toilet in the Eurobox format as an example:
- A special separator directs the urine forward into a separate tank.
- The solid waste falls into a container with a bag at the back.
- Then, sprinkle some hemp litter over the solid waste. This absorbs moisture and also helps reduce odors.

How sturdy is the BOXIO TOILET—can I sit on it without any problems?
The closed divider insert of the BOXIO TOILET XL can support a load of up to 150 kg. Important: The load should always be supported by the divider insert. The lid alone would sag, but when used in combination with the divider insert, the system can also support up to 150 kg.
Unpleasant odors are coming from the BOXIO TOILET XL—what can I do about it?
Odors vary greatly from person to person and depend on factors such as diet and health. It’s important to:
- After every bowel movement, sprinkle some litter over the solid waste to absorb moisture.
- Close the bucket with the lid as needed and empty it regularly.
- With the urine canister, you can use the closed lid or the red plug to prevent odors from escaping.
If you’d like, you can use a microbiological toilet additive. Be sure to choose one that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals.
What kind of litter should I use—do other types of litter work as well as hemp litter?
In general, all common types of bedding work in a similar way: They draw moisture away from solid waste, thereby reducing unpleasant odors.
We tested various types and chosehemp litter because of its excellent moisture and odor absorption.
On average, one bag of hemp litter lasts for about 10–15 large bathroom visits. The litter does not break down the feces—it “only” keeps things dry and reduces odors.
Does the BOXIO TOILET work for small children, too?
Yes, children can also use the BOXIO TOILET . Depending on their age, it may take a little practice and some sliding back and forth on the seat, but then the separation works reliably.
What are the dimensions of the BOXIO TOILET, and will it fit in my camper?
Yes, that’s exactly what it’s designed for! The compact Eurobox format should fit in any camper.
TIP: Choose a suitable spot while you’re setting up the camper.
- Height of the Eurobox with lid: approx. 28 cm (please allow for approx. 5 mm of clearance during installation).
- Height of the TOILET with lid and TOILET UP: approx. 39 cm.
- The BOXIO TOILET is not compatible with Tano Systainers or the Sortimo shelving system.
- A lower box is not possible, as all components are designed to fit the height of our Eurobox.
How do I clean the BOXIO TOILET, and which cleaning products are suitable?
The BOXIO TOILET is made of PP, ABS, HDPE, and silicone. These materials can be cleaned with a low-concentration solution of baking soda and/or vinegar mixed with water.
You can also use a surface disinfectant —please check material compatibility beforehand and, if in doubt, test it on an inconspicuous area first.
Our BOXIO - Clean cleaner is generally ready to use, but for light soiling, it can also be diluted to minimize consumption.

The BOXIO TOILET XL is a portable camping toilet built for anyone who wants to stay off-grid for longer. As a urine diverting toilet, it works entirely without water or chemical additives: urine and solids are collected separately, which stops odours before they start rather than masking them afterwards. With a 7 litre urine canister and an 8 litre solids container, it lasts for around 11 to 14 toilet visits before it needs emptying. Urine can be tipped straight down a normal toilet, solids go into general waste, and there's no need for a chemical tank, cassette or water connection, so there's no chemical waste to dispose of at a special collection point either.
